Deutan is a new experimental folk project by Robert Eyres. Having recently relocated from London to Bournemouth in anticipation of fatherhood, a change of surroundings and mindset is reflected in this debut set of ditty infused ballads, aptly named Spaces. Each track is instrumental with only titles such as ‘Hengistbury’ or ‘Eden’, to nudge the listener in some kind of psycho-geographical direction. Within the thirteen soundtrack-like explorations, there is a harmonious appreciation for both old and new instrumentation, where whirring Satie-esq keys interlock with traditional violin and banjo melodies, electronically underpinned by delayed and droning synths. The main percussive element comes from rhythmic guitar, present on tracks like ‘Haven’ and ‘The Head’, a typical characteristic of Eyres’ song writing (see Rodents and The Bin Bags). More than just a refinement of his previous efforts however, Spaces reveals Eyres’ intuitive multi instrumentalism, inherited from a musical family, and his ability to meticulously craft catchy tracks in any given form.
